Addie is very dedicated, hardworking, and responsible. She puts in so many hardworking hours into her swine projects. Addie has started her own swine breeding operation which is a huge step. Meet  Oscar Glass, a Sierra 4H student who is in 6th grade at Foothill Elementary in Prather. Here’s what Oscar’s 4H advisor had to say about him:

“Oscar joined Sierra 4h when he turned 9 years old with a single goal… to show a goat. His mom and dad encouraged him to pick a hog just like his sister, but Oscar was adamant that he was a goat boy.  Oscar is currently raising Doughnuts, a boer goat, and Sprinkles, a prospect breeding project. He enjoys spending time with his goats, working and preparing for future shows as well as conditioning and working on his goat hair and appearance.

Recently Oscar and the Glass family were evacuated due to the Creek Fire, having his goats with him to work and spend time with were just the ticket to keeping Oscar secure and focused instead of fretting about his home.

Last year Oscar won 1st place in Showmanship for his 4h age group, this year his goals include keeping that showmanship title and finishing in the top three of his market class. Oscar plans to continue his 4H career in meat goats by going to at least one more show next year and hopefully planning the breeding and raising of the next goat he brings to the Fresno Fair.

Oscar says that his favorite part of the Fresno Fair is hanging out with his friends in the barn and showing their animals together”

Meet Callie Flores, an American Union 4-H student who is a 6th grader at Washington Colony Elementary School:

“Hi, my name is Callie Flores and I am 11 years old. I am in the sixth grade and I attend Washington Colony Elementary School in Easton. I have been showing Boer Goats and Pygmy Goats for three years now and I really enjoy it. This year I’m showing my doe June and wether Elvis.  June and Elvis are boer cross meat goats born March 2020.  June was born and raised on our farm and we purchased Elvis from a local breeder.  They eat MoorMan’s ShowTec and MoorGrands Goat Feed and Purina High Octane Champion Drive two times a day.

4-H has been part of my life from an early age, since she I was 2 years old.  I have watched my cousins show Market Hogs, Sheep, Goats and I’ve spent a lot of time at the fairs. I’m following in the footstep of my Grandfather and Mother, who raised Hampshire Sheep, Pygmy Goats and Hogs. I currently own and breed 14 Registered Pygmy Goats and 3 Boer Goats. Exhibiting Market animals for the Fair takes a lot of hard work and is a big commitment financially. I raise Pygmy Goats and sell them to the community; I also participate in jackpot shows through-out the year in addition to Caruthers and Fresno Fair.  This is the first time I will be exhibiting a market goat I raised on our farm.”

Meet Tristen Nelms, a Fresno-Central FFA student who is a senior at Central West High School. Here’s what Tristan’s FFA advisor has to say about him:

“Tristen Nelms is a senior at Central High School-West campus. This will be his second year showing goats at the Fresno Fair. Tristan likes to say that “FFA saved my path in high school”. A troubled freshman, Tristen had to learn the hard way that failing grades and trips to the vice principal’s office were not the way to succeed. At the recommendation of a friend, Tristen signed up to show a market goat with the FFA. It was in the goat barn, Tristen found his gift for working with animals. He quickly joined the breeding team and was put in charge of caring for the herd of Boer breeding Boer does at the school farm. He single handling tamed (and named!) every single goat in the breeding herd and was a vital part of caring for them during their labor. He ensured all kids had a strong start in life. He even helped assist with the birth of his 2020 Fresno Fair Boer market wether, Dojo. He can often be found working in the goat barn or spending time with the breeding does in the pasture.

Tristen also helps tend to the eleven acre orchard located on the school farm at Central High School. He assists with watering, maintenance, and harvesting of the crops. He has learned extensively about vineyard operations, watermelons, pumpkins, and almonds. He has even decided to pursue a career in agriculture after graduation.

Tristen is a true success story of Fresno-Central FFA.We are proud of you!”

Meet Lisa Bates, a McKinley 4-H student who is an 11th grader with Yosemite Valley Public Homeschool Charter. Here’s what Lisa’s 4-H Advisor has to say about her:

“Lisa Bates is a 16 year old and is the McKinley 4-H Club President for the 20/21 program year. This is her fourth year as a McKinley 4-H member and her first year in the cattle group. As a student of a public homeschool charter, she gets her education from varying resources such as taking classes at the community college and taking a very active role in her 4-H club.

In the last 4 years, Lisa has raised and shown rabbits, chickens and goats at The Big Fresno Fair. While she enjoyed all of those animal projects she has decided the cattle project is her favorite. She started this year knowing virtually nothing about cattle or the beef industry and with two leaders who were learning everything there is to know right along with her. Besides the countless hours Lisa put into working with and training her market steer, Neil (not veal), she also spent numerous hours researching and networking with industry professionals to gather the most relevant information necessary for raising a healthy market ready steer.”

Meet Kody DeGroot, a Kerman 4-H student who is a 6th grader at Kerman Christian School. Here’s what Kody’s advisor has to say about him:

“Kody is a 3rd year showing a replacement heifer. His hard work and dedication to his animal is relentless. From the moment his cow was selected, he has cared for it every day, without ever being told to do so. He is very self-motivated when it comes to his 4-H animal project. He loves attending 4-H meetings and clubs, mostly because he is very social and enjoys being with other kids who share his interests.

This year, he will be showing and selling his cow “Maggie” at the Fresno Fair on October 3rd. He is bummed that the Fair is not all week, but understands the situation. Fair week is his favorite time of year; he loves hanging out in the barn and eating all the Fair Food. Last year, he even procured a paying job helping herd the sheep for Mutton Busting! During the COVID pandemic, he used his extra time to raise calves on the dairy. He bottle fed them twice-a-day and weaned them this last month. He plans on selling them next spring. We are so proud of his hard work and dedication.”

Kody is participating in the Dairy Replacement Heifer Sale on October 3; he is not participating in the Virtual Livestock Auction.
