Consider Giving to the Friends of The Big Fresno Fair in Honor of Giving Tuesday

Make every day a Day of Giving! From now until Giving Tuesday on December 1, please consider giving to Friends of the Big Fresno Fair, the Fair’s nonprofit Foundation that supports operations of the Fairgrounds and critical community giving and educational programs at the Fair!

Your donations, big or small, can help keep the Fair and these programs around for future generations to enjoy! Since March, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the cancellation of events everywhere and shut down most business operations of the Fairgrounds!  As a self-funded entity, now more than ever donations are needed to keep our Fairgrounds around here for future generations! To donate and support the Fair in honor of Giving Tuesday, click here or text “GOBFF” to 44321.

The first-ever Big Fresno Fair Virtual Livestock Sale kicks-off tomorrow Friday, October 9 at 11 a.m. and goes until Monday, October 12 at 11:59 p.m. The Virtual Livestock sale will feature nearly 500 animals from dedicated and hard-working 4-H and FFA members throughout Fresno County.

Leading up to the sale, we’ll be featuring 4-H & FFA exhibitors from participating chapters to highlight their animal project and all their hard work, while also giving buyers and our community a glimpse of animals they can bid on!

Meet Ryann Flach, a Sanger FFA student who is a junior at Sanger High School:

“It is my third year in FFA. We raise Boer goats and market lambs on our family farm in Sanger, CA and I’ve been showing animals at the Fair for over ten years. I started with animal projects in 4-H and when I got to high school I wanted continue showing livestock so I joined FFA. I’m also involved in floral design and the FFA officer team.

My market whether lamb, George, is currently about 130 pounds and he is a commercial cross breed. Being able to keep George in my own backyard allows me to watch over his food intake and make adjustments to his feed as needed. I can monitor is health daily and give him the exercise he needs to build muscle. I’ve learned over the years that all of this really matters and makes a difference in growing healthy, quality show animals.”

Help out these hard-working students in the community! Participate in the sale as a buyer or place an add-on bid! Every bit helps out these kids who’ve been working all year to get to where they are now. For more information about the Virtual Livestock Auction and how you can participate, click here.

“Harley has been active in Sierra 4-H Club since beginning as a Primary 4-H member when she was 5 years old.  Over the years, she has held just about every office in Sierra 4-H Club from President to Reporter.  She has been the Teen Leader for the Sheep Project for 4 years.  Harley has been instrumental in planning and presenting information at the monthly Sheep Project meetings.  She has also been very helpful in training younger members in Sheep Showmanship and in helping to prepare lambs for the show ring.  In addition to all the leadership activities that Harley has been involved in, she also raises a small flock of sheep and is very active in sports at Sierra High School.  Harley McCorkle is a great example of a “Hardworking Kid.”

Meet Ben Plascencia, a Reedley 4-H student who is a sophomore at Reedley Middle College High School (RMCHS). Here’s what Ben’s 4-H advisor had to say about him:

“Ben has been active in Reedley 4-H for 7 years and RMCHS FFA for 2 years.  He is currently president of Reedley 4-H and raising a steer for the Big Fresno Fair.

Ben originally joined 4-H to start a sheep project. He still manages a flock of breeding ewes and sells his lambs to other 4-H and FFA members as show projects. Three years ago Ben began raising steers. This year’s steer is named ‘Que Pasa Calabaza’, but everyone just calls him ‘Q’ for short. Ben bought Q last October and has spent the past 12 months working with him to bring out his full potential. As you can imagine, steers take a huge amount of work to raise. Ben estimates he has spent over 550 hours just brushing and blow drying Q’s hair and coat. And he has used over 8 gallons each of shampoo and conditioner to keep the steer’s hair in top show condition this past year.

Ben says working with steers was the perfect project to keep busy during this year of COVID-19 restrictions. Because steers are so big, it is very easy to maintain 6 feet of social distance even when practicing showmanship in small groups. Everyone is happy to stand back and give the steers and kids plenty of room to move around. Working with livestock has also given Ben and his friends an opportunity to get outside, be active and maintain a healthy level of ‘normal’ that so many youth are missing this year.”
